Sound Transit awards contract to Hoffman Construction to build U District Station for Northgate Link Extension
Construction begins this summer for light rail extension opening in 2021
The Sound Transit Board of Directors today authorized award of a contract to Hoffman Construction Company to build the U District Station finishes for the Northgate Link opening in 2021.
The $159.8 million contract includes constructing civil, structural and architectural finishes for the underground station in the U District neighborhood, with entrances along Brooklyn Avenue NE between NE 45th and NE 43rd streets. The work also includes elevators and escalators, mechanical and electrical equipment, fire protection and emergency ventilation systems, surface restoration, landscaping and 100 spaces for bike parking. The site is also designed to accommodate future development above the station.
Northgate Link trains traveling in twin tunnels to and from the University of Washington Station at Husky Stadium will stop at underground stations in the Roosevelt and U District neighborhoods, exit the tunnels at First Avenue Northeast and Northeast 95th and transition to a 0.8-mile elevated guideway to a station at Northgate Mall.
Construction on U District Station is scheduled to begin in June.
The $1.9 billion Northgate Link project extends light rail 4.3 miles north from the University of Washington. Riders using the U District Station will enjoy two-minute rides to Husky Stadium, five-minute rides to Northgate Mall, eight-minute rides to downtown and 42-minute rides to Sea-Tac Airport.
