First Quarter 2007 - January 1 - March 31
Sound Transit continued recent trends by posting significant gains in total ridership during the first quarter of 2007, with an eight percent increase in systemwide boarding compared with the first quarter of 2006. Average weekday boardings, a good indicator of commuting trends, were up by eight percent.
External factors have clearly helped increase ridership during the first quarter. The regional economy continued to add jobs, with employment growth occurring at key urban centers served by Sound Tranist, including Redmond, Tukwila, downtown Bellevue and Downtown Seattle. Retail gasoline prices were low for the first part of the quarter, but spiked to record levels recently, providing additional incentives for transit use.
Sounder has grown more than 23-percent compared with 2006. This number reflects real commuter growth, as there were fewer event service trains for Seahawks compared to last year. ST Express ridership was up six percent for the quarter, and ridership on buses was particularly strong from Snohomish County into Seattle and on South King County to Seattle service. Tacoma Link light rail experienced a slight increase in ridership, and although weekday boardings were slightly lower than last year, weekend ridership is quite strong.
