Systemwide Ridership Report

Third Quarter 2004 - July 1 - September 30

Total system ridership for the third quarter for ST Express regional bus, Sounder commuter rail and Tacoma Link light rail reached 2,620,634 passenger boardings, up 20.2 percent over third quarter 2003. Average weekday boardings were 36,123, up 14.4 percent from third quarter 2003.

Total system ridership includes weekday and weekend ridership for express bus, light rail and commuter rail, as well as special service for commuter rail and express bus. Average weekday boardings are based on Monday - Friday ridership.

Sound Transit's ridership data is obtained from the agencies that operate Sound Transit service. Sound Transit express bus routes are operated by King County Metro Transit and updated when Metro automatic passenger count data is made available.

ST Express icon ST Express Regional Bus

ST Express regional bus ridership totaled 2,173,627 passenger boardings, up 14.2 percent over third quarter 2003.  Average weekday boardings were at 30,024 per day, up 13.4 percent over third quarter 2003.

All routes in regular service showed an increase in ridership over the same quarter of last year except for the Bellevue-Seattle Express (Route 550). The ridership decrease for Route 550 was 1 percent. Ridership on the Puyallup Fair service was down compared to last year due to inclement weather on the Fair weekends and a large number of other events competing for Fair attendance.

Sounder Commuter Rail Sounder Commuter Rail

Sounder commuter rail boardings totaled 248,015 in the third quarter of 2004 compared to 193,276 in the third quarter of 2003, an increase of 28.3 percent. Average weekday boardings were at 3,588, up 29.5 percent over third quarter 2003.

Ridership continues to increase on both lines, Everett - Seattle and Tacoma - Seattle. Third quarter special service included Mariner Sunday Home Run service and Sunday Seahawk service. In September, a special train took football fans to the Washington State University vs University of Colorado game at Qwest Field.

Tacoma Link Light Rail Tacoma Link Light Rail

Tacoma Link light rail began operations during the third quarter of 2003. Tacoma Link light rail ridership for the third quarter of 2004 totaled 198,992 passenger boardings with average weekday boardings at 2,511, up 7.4 percent over average weekday boardings for the third quarter of 2003 which were 2,337. The average weekday boardings continue to exceed the year 2010 projection of 2,000 passengers per day.
