Systemwide Ridership Report

Third Quarter 2006 - July 1 - September 30

Sound Transit continued to post significant gains in total ridership during the third quarter, with a 13 percent increase in systemwide boardings compared with third quarter 2005. Average weekday passenger boardings, a good indicator of commuting trends, were up by 15 percent.

External factors have clearly helped increase ridership during the third quarter. The regional economy continued to add jobs, with employment growth occurring at key urban centers served by Sound Transit, including Redmond, Tukwila, downtown Bellevue and Downtown Seattle. Retail gasoline prices hit an all-time high during the summer, providing additional incentives for transit use.

Total system ridership includes weekday and weekend ridership for express bus, light rail and commuter rail, as well as special service for commuter rail and express bus. Average weekday boardings are based on Monday - Friday ridership.
