 North Link Light RailExtending Light Rail From Downtown Seattle to Northgate
Extending Link north from the University District to Lynnwood was included in the Sound Transit 2 plan approved by the region’s voters in November 2008.
When it is complete, North Link will provide a comfortable and convenient travel option for people who live and work in the area between downtown and Northgate. North Link will connect four urban centers to the initial segment - Downtown Seattle, Capitol Hill, The University District, and Northgate - providing additional travel capacity in the highest ridership corridor in the region.
Some 150,000 daily commuters are expected to board light rail for reliable service, unaffected by freeway slowdowns, saving users over 20,000 hours of travel time each weekday.
North Link Stations
Brooklyn Station
Brooklyn Station will be located on Brooklyn Avenue NE between NE 43rd and NE 45th streets in the University District. This underground station will serve the surrounding residential community, the "Ave" business district, other employment sites, the UW Tower (formerly Safeco) and north University of Washington campus.
Approximately 12,300 people a day are expected to board light rail at Brooklyn Station by the year 2030.
Roosevelt Station
Roosevelt Station will be located underground just west of 12th Avenue NE, across from Roosevelt High School, with entrances at NE 65th and NE 67th streets. The Roosevelt station will serve the surrounding neighborhoods and the Roosevelt business district including Roosevelt Square.
Approximately 8,500 people a day are forecast to board light rail at Roosevelt Station by the year 2030.
Northgate Station
The elevated Northgate station will be located east of 1st Avenue NE, spanning NE 103rd Street. Station entrances will be on the Northgate Mall property north of NE 103rd Street and south of NE 103rd Street near the Northgate Transit Center. This station would provide access to the Northgate Mall, bus transfers at the transit center and to adjacent park-and-ride facilities.
Northgate Station is being designed to be compatible with the ST2 extension to Lynnwood.
Approximately 15,200 daily riders will board light rail at Northgate Station by 2030.
Typical travel times to/from Downtown Seattle are expected to be:
- Northgate Station Bus: 26 min Rail: 13 min
- Brooklyn/NE 45th Station Bus: 22 min Rail: 8 min
Environmental Work
On April 7, 2006, Sound Transit and the Federal Transit Administration issued the North Link Final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) to the 1999 Central Link Final Environmental Impact Statement on the light rail transit project running from Downtown Seattle to Northgate. The Final SEIS evaluates the environmental impacts of alternative route alignments and station locations from Downtown Seattle to Northgate. The Final SEIS includes the Preferred Alternative identified by the Sound Transit Board, with stations at Capitol Hill, University of Washington, Brooklyn, Roosevelt and Northgate.
The Federal Transit Administration has issued the Record of Decision (ROD) for North Link. The ROD acknowledges the completion of the environmental process for North Link.
Up Next
Sound Transit is currently developing a schedule for final design and construction. The agency will continue to coordinate with Metro, City of Seattle, and stakeholders in the neighborhoods surrounding the Brooklyn, Roosevelt, and Northgate stations.
