ST Express Bus Facility and Service Improvements

Building new transit centers, HOV lanes, and maintenance & operations facilities to support expanding the bus fleet and improving service.

Sound Transit capital projects to support the ST Express regional bus program include building park-and-ride lots as well as transit centers and high occupancy vehicle (HOV) access ramps.

Ongoing Projects include:

  • I-90 Two Way Transit & HOV Operations Stage 2
  • Kirkland Transit Center
  • Mountlake Terrace Freeway Station
  • Renton HOV Access
  • Sound Transit contributes funding to support other projects that are under construction around the region. Learn more about Sound Transit partnership projects >>>

On Nov. 4, 2008, Puget Sound area voters approved the Sound Transit 2 Plan, which included funding for additional improvements to ST Express bus facilities and service.

Sound Transit plans to increase service levels in the following corridors - I-5 (Everett/Lynnwood to Seattle and Tacoma to Sea-Tac Airport); I-90 (Issaquah to Bellevue and Seattle); I-405 (Everett to Bellevue); SR 167 (Puyallup, Sumner and Auburn to Seattle); and SR 522 (Woodinville and Bothell to Seattle) - by improving service frequency, expanding hours of operation and adding trips to relieve overloads.

New service will be added in the SR 520 corridor to further develop bus rapid transit (BRT) connecting Redmond and Bellevue and Redmond and the University of Washington.

Throughout implementation, Sound Transit will work with the WA State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), Community Transit, Everett Transit, King County Metro and Pierce Transit to find solutions to rising congestion on HOV facilities in an effort to improve bus speed and reliability.

The voter-approved measure includes funds needed to construct new maintenance and operations facilities to support existing and future ST Express services through at least 2020. The project includes one facility to accommodate up to 200 buses located in East King County and a second facility located in Pierce County.

As bus maintenance capacity and fleet become available, Sound Transit will implement additional service as quickly as possible. Total annual ST Express service hours across the region will be increased by about 17 percent by 2011.

Ongoing service expansion information is online on our service planning page.
