Stay safe & sound driving around Link light rail

Link light rail trains are here! Testing is underway on the new light rail line from downtown Seattle all the way to Tukwila. Passenger service begins in 2009.

Link’s quiet, state-of-the-art rail system travels along Martin Luther King Jr. Way S in the Rainier Valley and the Busway/Transit Way in SODO. Trains will share the street with cars, buses, motorcyclists and pedestrians.

For your safety along MLK Jr. Way S, the light rail line is separated from the roadway by a curb. U-turns and left hand turns are allowed only at designated intersections. Special signals and street signs are posted along the rail line to help guide drivers.

Do not get trapped on the tracks at an intersection. Before you cross, be sure there is enough room on the other side to clear the tracks completely. Trains overhang the rail tracks by at least three feet on each side.

If your car stalls on the tracks

If your car stalls on the tracks and a train approaches, get everyone out of the car immediately. Move away from the tracks at a 45-degree angle in the direction of the oncoming train. If your vehicle is hit, debris will spread out from the tracks in the same direction the train is moving. When you are safely away from the tracks, call 9-1-1.
