Train Control Engineer

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Perform assigned train control engineering planning, interface management and integration activity, design, and construction work involving multiple consultants and contractors. Support civil/system integration, systems design, design support during construction, and facility/building design.

2. Monitor engineering activities to assure contract compliance; respond to contractor request for information and process contractor submittals as requested.

3. Provide support to Project Managers in the day-to-day oversight of the project construction and the associated coordination with Sound Transit divisions, third party partners and stakeholders, consultants, and contractors. Provide technical expertise and administrative support to the construction management teams.

4. Perform advanced professional level duties in support of train control design and construction programs; develop and apply complex design criteria, engineering standards, technical criteria, and quality control procedures; work independently or as a team member on complex problems or projects where analysis of situations or data requires an evaluation of variables.

5. Respond to questions and inquiries from consultants, contractors, engineering professionals, and Agency staff regarding engineering projects or area of assignment.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:
• Operations, services, and activities of an engineering and construction program.
• Complex principles and practices of train control engineering.
• Professional and/or technical expert knowledge of industry engineering principles and practices.
• Principles of interface management and design integration.
• Recent developments, current literature, and sources of information related to innovations and trends in traction power engineering design and development.
• Computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and statistical databases.
• Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.

Ability to:
• Perform professional engineering duties involved in the design and development of a variety of engineering projects.
• Manage multiple tasks, set objectives/goals, and re-prioritize as needed.
• Adapt to occasionally changing project assignments as needed to balance work loads and achieve other Department objectives.
• Plan and organize work to meet changing priorities and deadlines.
• Prepare, review, interpret, analyze, and modify complex engineering plans, drawings, specifications, contract documents, and engineering reports for conformance to professional standards and approved budgets.
• Understand, interpret, and apply general and specific administrative and departmental policies and procedures as well as applicable federal, state, and local policies, laws, and regulations.
• Prepare clear and concise reports.
• Work effectively under pressure, meet deadlines, and adjust to changing priorities.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education and Experience

Education/Training:
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in electrical, communication, or systems engineering or a field or discipline related to the area of assignment.

Experience:
Five to 10 years of increasingly responsible engineering experience related to area of assignment.

License or Certificate:
Professional engineering registration in Washington is not required but experience and academic qualifications necessary to obtain a valid certificate of registration as a Professional Engineer issued by the State of Washington within two years is required.
