Link Light Rail Projects

Construction is nearly complete and testing is underway on a new Link light rail line that is a critical to this region's transportation future. The light rail line is opening in 2009 in two stages: the 13.9-mile segment from Westlake Station to Tukwila International Boulevard Station opens July 18 2009 and a 1.7-mile extension to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport opens December, 2009.

Ridership is expected to reach 21,000 riders every weekday by the end of 2009. In 2010, after a full year of operation, the average weekday ridership from downtown Seattle to Sea-Tac Airport is expected to total 26,600 riders.

To support the rail line, Sound Transit retrofitted the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel and its existing stations for joint use by both light rail trains and buses. The tunnel reopened for buses in September 2007.

In November 2008, voters in Central Puget Sound approved expansion of the region’s mass transit system, including 36 miles of new light rail service. Learn more about Link expansion here>>>
