Peter de Lory, Photographer in Residence (1999 - present)

Peter deLoryPeter de Lory was one of the first artists to be included in the STart program.  Peter was commissioned in 1999 to produce a collection of photographs that chronicle and interpret the building of the regional transit system.  He was not asked to literally document construction, but to bring his own artistry and perspective to the process.

"Building a modern transit system is an epic venture, the complexity of which falls almost beyond our ability to take in as a single task. My role as photographer-in-residence for Sound Transit is that of observer. The power of photography in this context lies in its ability to act as a pointer, drawing attention to a moment's importance and freezing it in the frame."

In February 2005, in collaboration with friend and fellow photographer John Lewis, Peter focused his lens on light rail construction currently underway from Seattle to Tukwila.  This ongoing collection of images is available through an online gallery, with new images added every month.  In its entirety, viewers are able to see the evolution of the construction since it began in November 2004.
