Mahler famously said that a “symphony must be like the world. It must embrace everything.” His massive Third Symphony fulfills this belief by encompassing the vastness of nature, expressing in turn the elemental forces of life, the flowers in the meadow and the animals in the forest before reaching beyond the earthly realm to depict the heavens and love itself.

The Seattle Symphony performs energetically in a well-lit room.

Recognized as one of the “most vital American orchestras” (NPR), the Seattle Symphony performs at Benaroya Hall in the heart of downtown Seattle and is internationally acclaimed for its inventive programming, community-minded initiatives and superb recordings on the Seattle Symphony Media label. The Seattle Symphony, which celebrates its 120th season as well as the 25th anniversary of Benaroya Hall’s opening this year, has something for everyone, ranging from timeless classics by Beethoven and Mozart to contemporary favorites such as BLACKSTAR SYMPHONY: The Music of David Bowie and a Tribute to John Williams.

The Seattle Symphony is a vital part of the Pacific Northwest cultural scene and is recognized for its extraordinary performances, programming, recordings and community engagement.

With a strong commitment to new music and a legacy of over 150 recordings, the orchestra has garnered five Grammy Awards, 27 Grammy nominations, two Emmy Awards and was named Gramophone’s 2018 Orchestra of the Year.

Since its inaugural performance on Dec. 29, 1903, the Seattle Symphony has played a distinctive role in the realm of symphonic music and the revitalization efforts of downtown Seattle.

In 1998 the Seattle Symphony inaugurated its new home in the heart of downtown Seattle, Benaroya Hall, noted for its architectural and acoustical splendor. In 2019 the orchestra opened Octave 9: Raisbeck Music Center, an immersive environment for inventive performances, education opportunities and community engagement.

The Symphony performs in Benaroya Hall from September through July, reaching over 500,000 people annually through live performances and radio broadcasts, and through the Seattle Symphony+ streaming service, the orchestra’s concerts reach audiences at home and around the world.
