At Sound Transit, we’re committed to making our transit system accessible to everyone.
That’s why we’re excited to announce the construction of a second elevator at the east end of the skybridge at SeaTac/Airport Station. This important project will enhance connectivity and provide more reliable access for all riders, including those with mobility challenges.
While this upgrade will deliver significant long-term benefits, we recognize it comes with some short-term construction impacts, and we appreciate your patience as we make these improvements.
What you need to know
This project will affect passengers using SeaTac/Airport Station and those who use the skybridge to cross Airport Expressway to connect to the Sea-Tac Airport terminal.
It may impact those accessing the bus stops on International Boulevard at South 176th Street and the pick-up/drop-off area on the east side of International Boulevard as construction activity progresses.
These bus stops are served by:
ST Express 560 and 574
King County Metro RapidRide A Line
King County Metro Route 161
Key dates:
Beginning Jan. 8, we will start preparations for construction. Initial activities include modifying the existing passenger drop-off area and blocking off portions of the plaza around the current elevator and stairs.
Beginning the week of Jan. 13, fencing will be installed to accommodate construction equipment. Passengers should be aware that there may be changes to the regular pathways near the base of the elevator.
Beginning Jan. 20, additional construction equipment, temporary buildings and security lighting will be installed to support this project.
These dates indicate initial activities associated with this work. Additional construction replated impacts may occur over the course of this project.
Maintaining accessibility during construction
An accessible drop-off area will remain available throughout the construction period. A clearly marked accessible pedestrian pathway will also be provided to ensure safe access to and from the station.
While the project is underway, there may be temporary impacts to the following:
The existing elevator, stairwell, and skybridge
Sidewalks and bus stops on the east side of International Boulevard at South 176th Street (due to electrical work early in the project)
The duration and timing of these impacts are still being finalized. We will share updates as the schedule is confirmed, including details about alternative accommodations for riders who cannot use stairs.
Why this project matters
Adding a second elevator to the east end of the skybridge will improve accessibility and make navigating the station easier for everyone.
This upgrade reflects Sound Transit’s dedication to enhancing the rider experience and ensuring equitable access to our services.
