Closure of far-right southbound lane on I-5 in Kent at South 259th Street scheduled for July 21 through August 5

Closure to complete drainage work adjacent to the Federal Way Link Extension right-of-way

Publish Date

Crews working on the Federal Way Link Extension will close the far-right lane of southbound I-5 for approximately two weeks beginning at 10 p.m. on Sunday, July 21 until Monday, August 5. This closure is necessary to install drainage along I-5 South to accommodate Link light rail facilities.

The closure will begin at the South 259th Street overpass in Kent to the off ramp to South 272nd Street.

On Sunday night the 21st only, crews will have two southbound lanes closed for barrier installation.

Travelers are urged to drive carefully through the construction zone and plan for increased travel times.

Set to open in 2026, the Federal Way Link Extension extends light rail from Angle Lake Station in the city of SeaTac to the Federal Way Transit Center. The 7.8-mile extension includes three stations: Kent Des Moines near Highline College, Star Lake at South 272nd Street and Federal Way Downtown. More information about the project can be found here.
