Twelve hundred new parking stalls are about to become available to Tacoma/Pierce County transit riders with the grand opening of Phase II of the Tacoma Dome Station parking garage, a joint project of Pierce Transit and Sound Transit. The public is invited to join the combined grand opening celebration and ceremonial start of construction for Sound Transit's Tacoma Link light rail project.

Wednesday, Oct. 18
Noon - 12:45 p.m.
The new Tacoma Dome Station Plaza
East 25th Street at East "E" St.
(Between Freighthouse Square and the new garage)
Tacoma

Those attending can enjoy refreshments from Freighthouse Square merchants, listen to a kindergarten chorus, check out new public art installations, and see a model of the new Tacoma Link light rail vehicles. Among those participating in the festivities will be U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks, state Rep. Ruth Fisher, Tacoma Mayor Brian Ebersole and Tacoma City Councilmember and Sound Transit Boardmember Kevin Phelps. Free rides to and from the event will be available on the LINK downtown connector from 11:15 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

The opening of the new garage, which doubles the parking capacity at Tacoma Dome Station, is a major milestone in realizing the vision of creating a premiere transportation hub for Tacoma/Pierce County. The facility already offers people access to local and regional bus services, Sounder commuter rail trains, and LINK downtown connector free bus service during morning and afternoon rush hours, with Greyhound bus service becoming available in the near future. By late 2002 Tacoma Link light rail will connect the facility with four other stations with stops at the U.W.-Tacoma campus, downtown and the theater district at South 9th. Actual construction on the Tacoma Link light rail project will begin early next year, with service scheduled to begin in late 2002.
