5th Street NW utility work

Publish Date

Alert revised Oct. 27, 2020.

Crews working on the future Puyallup Station parking garage will conduct utility work on 5th Street Northwest between West Main Avenue and the railroad tracks. This will require temporary lane shifts, removal of on-street parking, and sidewalk closures.

When

Starting as early as Thursday, Oct. 29, and lasting through approximately Dec. 18. Work will take place on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Where

  • Both lanes of traffic on 5th Street Northwest will shift to the east, and on-street parking on the east side of 5th Street Northwest will be temporarily removed.
  • 2nd Avenue Northwest will be temporarily closed to through traffic between 5th and 6th Streets.
  • The sidewalks on the west side of 5th Street Northwest south of 2nd Avenue Northwest will be temporarily closed.
  • The sidewalks on the south side of 2nd Avenue Northwest near 5th Street will also be temporarily closed.

What to expect

  • Crews will dig a utility trench to relocate overhead utilities into the ground. This creates space for our future pedestrian bridge across 5th Street, connecting the garage to the station.
  • We'll have signs in place and will occasionally use flaggers to stop traffic when needed for equipment access to the work zone.
  • The work may create minimal noise impacts.
  • Crews are following strict COVID-19 health and safety practices.
  • As described in previous alerts, 3rd Avenue Northwest between 5th and 6th Streets has closed permanently, and several sidewalks are closed through early 2022, including: the north side of 3rd Avenue between 6th and 7th Streets, the east side of 6th Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, and the west side of 5th Street between the railroad tracks and 2nd Avenue.
