Street closures on Commerce Street and N. 1st Street; multiple traffic impacts along the route during the week of March 18
Sections of North 1st Street and Commerce Street are closed for stormwater work. The contractor will begin sewer work on 11th Street east of Martin Luther King Jr. Way. Crews will continue sewer work along Division Avenue and expect to move to North I Street to North J Street. Underground work continues in front of Tacoma General Hospital along Martin Luther King Jr. Way. The contractor will start electrical trenching for signals on South 4th St. in between Broadway and Stadium Way. Crews continue to create pole foundations along Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

Where
Commerce Street: 7th St. to I-705 on-ramp – street closure. Commerce Street in between 7th Street and the I-705 onramp will be closed in both directions. To access I-705, follow the detour to South 9th Street and A Street. The contractor is installing a new stormwater system and bypass. The bypass will be placed on Broadway and go down the Spanish Steps. Beginning on March 25, work can occur day and night (24-hour construction).
North 1st Street from Tacoma Avenue to G Street – street closure. North 1st Street will be closed in both directions from Tacoma Avenue to G. St. to begin the stormwater work. North 1st Street will be open to one-way traffic from G. Street to Yakima. Access businesses on Division Avenue and G Street.
South 11th Street east of Martin Luther King Jr. Way – eastbound lane closure. The eastbound traffic lane from Martin Luther King Jr. Way to I Street will be temporarily closed. Please follow detours. One-way traffic westbound on 11th Street will be maintained. The contractor is installing a sewer line.
Division Avenue from Yakima Avenue to I Street – southbound lane closure. The southbound lane on Division is closed in between Yakima Avenue and I Street. The contractor expects to complete this work and then move to the next block, digging a trench across I Street and then continuing the sewer work from I Street to J Street. Two-way traffic is maintained. Crews are working on a sewer line.
Martin Luther King Jr. Way near 3rd St – lane restriction. The lane near Tacoma General Hospital is closed for underground utility work. Two-way traffic is maintained on MLK Jr Way.
Martin Luther King Jr. Way in between 14th Street and 9th Street – lane restrictions. Crews are creating pole foundations, including doing potholing on the east side of Martin Luther King Jr. Way, starting at 14th Street and going north to 9th Street. Two-way traffic will be maintained.
South 4th Street – westbound lane closure. Westbound 4th Street in between Broadway and Stadium Way is closed for electrical trench work. Eastbound 4th Street is open to access Stadium Way to I-705.
Stadium Way: southbound lane closure; use detours. Southbound on Stadium Way continues to be closed to traffic from Broadway to South 4th Street. Please follow the detours on St. Helens Avenue, Broadway and Tacoma Avenue one-way traffic going north on Stadium Way is open. The contractor is working on both water and storm drainage systems. Tacoma Public Utilities will start connecting customers on North E Street to the new water service.

- Driveway and pedestrian access is maintained, although some sidewalks and crosswalks will be temporarily closed. Pedestrian detours will be in place.
