Light rail to Downtown Redmond just six weeks away

Simulated service begins and new web site launched with information on opening day and how to ride the new extension

Publish Date

In just over six weeks on May 10, 2025, the 2 Line will grow by 3.4 miles and two new stations with the opening of Downtown Redmond Link. The extension includes stations at Marymoor Village and Downtown Redmond, which will become the permanent 2 Line terminus on the Eastside.

Leading up to opening day, the final phase of testing has started. Called simulated service, light rail vehicles run a normal schedule without passengers between Redmond Technology and Downtown Redmond stations. During this time, passengers will need to board and exit at Redmond Technology Station.

Sound Transit has launched a new informational site to help people plan for opening day and their upcoming trips on the 2 Line. Visit soundtransit.org/helloredmond for details about opening day activities, schedule information and to sign up for project alerts.

The opening day celebration will start at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 10 with a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Downtown Redmond Station. Following the ribbon cutting, service is anticipated to start around noon. Community events at both the Marymoor Village and Downtown Redmond stations will run from noon to 4 p.m. The Hello, Redmond! site will be updated as details are finalized, and people should check back often for the latest information.

The 2 Line will run every 10 minutes from 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. seven days a week between South Bellevue and Downtown Redmond stations. Passengers will be able to connect with the regional transit network at South Bellevue, Bellevue Downtown, Redmond Technology, Marymoor Village and Downtown Redmond stations.

“May 10 will be an historic day in Redmond,” said Redmond Mayor and Sound Transit Board Member Angela Birney. “The City and our community have been planning for these stations for decades, and it is because of the collaboration with our many partners that these stations will soon be a reality and provide an additional transportation option for so many.”

The Marymoor Village Station includes a 1,400-stall parking garage and will provide convenient access to concerts and recreational activities at Marymoor Park. The Downtown Redmond Station is close to shopping and dining at Redmond Town Center, and new transit-oriented housing in the city’s downtown core.

Bike parking is available at all stations, and several 2 Line stations are accessible from the Eastrail corridor and the regional trail network.

When the full 2 Line opens, it will add the Mercer Island and Judkins Park stations and connect to the 1 Line at the International District/Chinatown Station in downtown Seattle.
