RESCHEDULED: Escalators Arrive at Mercer Island Station
Escalator delivery originally scheduled to begin on Tuesday June 11, has been rescheduled and will now occur June 18 – 20 and 25 – 27.
Crews will use a crane to pick and lower the escalators into place in both the east and west head houses. During this time, the sidewalks along 80th Ave. SE and 77th Ave. SE. between N. Mercer Way and Sunset Highway, may be temporarily closed to pedestrian traffic. One sidewalk will remain open at all times and pedestrians should follow flaggers and detour signage to reach their destinations.
Additionally, the Island Crest Way eastbound HOV off-ramp will be closed from 7 a.m. – 3 p.m. daily from June 18 – 20 and 25 – 27 to safely complete this work. Please note: standard closure hours (9 a.m. – 3 p.m.) will resume once this work is complete.

- Escalators will arrive at the Mercer Island Station for installation occurring June 18 – 20 and 25 – 27, from 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.
- Sidewalks along 77th Ave. SE and 80th Ave. SE, between N. Mercer Way and Sunset Highway, will close intermittently during this time. One sidewalk will remain open at all times and pedestrians should follow detour signage.
- The Island Crest Way eastbound HOV off-ramp will close daily from 7 a.m. – 3 p.m. Drivers can use the 77th eastbound or Island Crest Way eastbound general purpose off-ramps during this closure.
- Plan ahead, leave early and allow extra time to reach your destination.
- Due to inclement weather or unforeseen issues, dates and times are subject to change.
Overnight work on Mercer Island
Beginning as early as Monday June 17, structural steel ‘portals’ for the overhead catenary system, will be delivered near the East Channel Bridge. The overhead catenary system carries the electrified that powers light rail trains.
To safely do so, crews will close the eastbound HOV and adjacent left lane overnight near the East Channel Bridge, nightly, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
