How to ride and transfer: 2 Line extension to Downtown Redmond Edition

The wait for the light rail to Downtown Redmond is almost over!

Starting around noon on May 10, the 2 Line will have two new stations – Marymoor Village Station and Downtown Redmond Station.  

This expansion also means there will be more new riders using the system. If that’s you, read on for the basics on riding Link and get insight on the best way to pay, advice on transferring transit services, and what a good passenger looks like.  

How to pay 

An ORCA card is the easiest way to pay for your ride! 

Available for $3 at a ticket machine or on Google Wallet, you can load your ORCA card with cash value or a pass to pay your fare. Just tap your ORCA card to the yellow card reader before getting on Link.  

You can also use the Transit GO Ticket app by buying tickets in advance and activating your purchased tickets before boarding the train. One-way adult fares are $3, day passes are $6, and youth 18 and under ride free!  

Reduced fares are available for seniors, riders with lower incomes and riders with disabilities. Our friendly Fare Ambassadors are there to check your fare and answer any questions you may have!

How to transfer 

An ORCA card is the only way to pay for transfers between different services, like trains, buses, and streetcars. It works with Community Transit, King County Metro, Seattle Streetcar, Seattle Monorail, and more. 

As long as you transfer within two hours and tap your ORCA card at each station you stop at, your original fare will be credited toward the next leg of your journey.

How to plan your route  

Now that you’ve got an ORCA card, do you know where you’re going? Or when the train will arrive? Where are the bus connections? We recommend planning your trip, so you know where you’re going and how much time you have.  

The Sound Transit Trip Planner is an excellent tool for setting your route. The tool provides accurate light rail schedules, service alerts, and seamless trip plans with other regional transit services.  

The 2 Line trains run about every 10 minutes, depending on the time of day. After tapping your ORCA card and entering the platform, check the electronic display for the next train’s arrival time. Additionally, always give yourself a little room between transferring services so you’re not in a rush.

Public transit is a shared space, so following a few rules and courtesies means we can all ride happily. Allow people with disabilities and senior citizens priority seats. Let passengers exit the train before boarding. Wear headphones when listening to your favorite music or podcast.  

Your safety is our first priority!  If you see something that needs attention, call or text security at 206-398-5268. And remember, trains can’t stop, but you can! Always look both ways, stay behind the yellow line on the platform, and use crosswalks not shortcuts when crossing tracks. Follow the rules and courtesies that help keep us all safe.
